Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking an MRI Technologist to perform high-quality MRI examinations in accordance with established protocols and patient safety standards.

You will screen patients, document exams in RIS/PACS, maintain image quality and workflow, and participate in training and quality initiatives while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited imaging program.
  • ARRT or ARMRIT MRI registry eligible; must obtain within 1 year.
  • 1–2 years of modality-specific experience.
  • Produce high-quality MRI images with minimal supervision.

Job Description Summary

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist (MRI) reports to the site supervisor and the radiology manager. Under general supervision, the MRI Technologist performs high‑quality MRI examinations in accordance with established protocols on patient populations for physician interpretation.

Responsibilities
  • Perform MRI examinations maintaining image quality, patient safety, and efficient workflow.
  • Complete patient screening, exam documentation, and image verification in RIS and PACS to support timely physician interpretation.
  • Maintain image quality, productivity, and patient workflow, adhering to departmental and modality‑specific protocols.
  • Provide safe, compassionate, patient‑centered care throughout the imaging process.
  • Utilize the SHIELD reporting platform for events outside a normal encounter.
  • Adhere to all MRI safety requirements, including zone protocols, implant screening, and ferromagnetic safety practices.
  • Perform routine equipment quality control checks, assist with troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and place tickets as needed.
  • Support onboarding and training of staff and students, and facilitate a positive work and learning environment.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives related to quality, efficiency, patient, employee, and physician satisfaction and safety.
  • Attend staff meetings, lunch and learns, and quality meetings.
Qualifications
  • Graduated from an accredited imaging program.
  • Registry eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) in MRI.
  • Must obtain registry within 1 year of hire.
  • Produce very high‑quality special imaging with little supervision.
  • Function effectively in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Familiar with age‑specific criteria.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required; certification from AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  • 1–2 years of modality‑specific experience.
  • Skills: General MRI exams, implants, elastography, and defecography.
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, climb ladders/step stools, work indoors, from elevated areas, in confined/cramped spaces, kneel, bend, twist, squat, and perform pinching operations.
  • Use both hands/arms and both legs.
  • Perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Maintain good finger dexterity, tactile sensory functions, and olfactory sensory function.
  • Maintain 20/40 corrected vision, perceive colors, determine distance/relationship between objects, have good peripheral vision, and maintain hearing acuity with correction.
  • Lift and carry up to 200 feet, 50 lbs unassisted; lift patients up to 350 lbs assisted; lift objects from floor to 72 inches, 50 lbs unassisted; lower objects from height of 72 inches, 50 lbs unassisted; push/pull objects/patients to 350 lbs unassisted.
  • Qualified physically for respirator use as determined by medical personnel.

  • Learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.
