Job summary

Yale New Haven Health is seeking an Outpatient Coder I to perform comprehensive review of medical records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and ICD-10-PCS codes in an outpatient setting. You will handle coding tasks, resolve claims edits, and communicate with clinical staff as needed.

The role requires strong knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and coding guidelines. Candidates should have at least 2 years of outpatient coding experience, be familiar with Epic and 3M encoder, and hold or pursue

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred with coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and disease processes.
• Requires minimum 2 years outpatient or professional coding experience in a complex service line. RHIT/RHIA or CCS/CCS-P credentials acceptable.
• CCS/CCS-P or RHIT credential preferred; valid coding credential through AAPC or AHIMA required; CPC-A/CCA not accepted.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to determine ICD-10-CM codes per official guidelines.
• Select CPT codes, modifiers, ICD-10-PCS; resolve CCIs as applicable.
• Maintain 95%+ coding quality across diagnostic, procedural, and modifier codes.
• Meet department productivity expectations for the coding service line.
• Code at least one complex outpatient service line (e.g., Cardiology, IR, Oncology or Same Day Surgery).
• Engage in ongoing education and knowledge development; participate in learning circles and coding education sessions.
