Job summary

Tri-Cities Family YMCA in Michigan seeks an OST Program Staff member to support school-age children in our Out of School Time program. Under the OST Site Lead, you will supervise, engage, and provide a safe, inclusive environment for children before and after school and during summer sessions.

You will collaborate with the OST team, follow licensing rules, and participate in orientation and ongoing training. Must have CPR/First Aid certification or obtain within 30 days.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Must demonstrate cooperative teamwork within the OST program.
  • Certifications: Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid within 30 days of employment.
  • Michigan Child Care Licensing qualifications must be maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Provide appropriate care, supervision, and engagement for school-age children.
  • Collaborate with OST Site Lead and program team to run a safe, smooth daily operation.
  • Facilitate age-appropriate educational and recreational activities.
  • Develop positive relationships with children and families and communicate professionally.
  • Maintain attendance, release procedures, and program health and safety rules.
  • Maintain confidentiality and keep areas clean and ready for use.
  • Report concerns per policy and participate in required training and development.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the OST Site Lead and/or OST Program Director, the OST Program Staff member provides direct care, supervision, and engagement for school-age children participating in the Tri-Cities Family YMCA Out of School Time program. This position works as part of the OST team to provide a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

AREAS OF DIRECT RESPONSIBILITY

Out of School Time Program

School Year: Monday-Friday, as defined by site location, 6:30 am-9:00 am and 3:00 pm-6:00 pm Summer: Monday-Friday 7:00 am-6:00 pm

ESSENTIAL OVERALL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide appropriate care, continuous supervision, and engagement of children at all times in accordance with YMCA policies and Michigan child care licensing requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with the OST Site Lead and program team to ensure the program operates safely, smoothly, and consistently each day.
  • Facilitate engaging, age-appropriate, educational and recreational activities for school-age children that promote social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
  • Develop positive relationships with children and families and communicate in a pleasant, professional, and respectful manner.
  • Communicate with the OST Site Lead regarding child behavior, illness, injuries, concerns, parent communication, and suggestions for program improvement.
  • Follow all required procedures related to attendance, child release, ratios, group size, transitions, field trips, transportation, meals/snacks, and other program operations as applicable.
  • Maintain confidentiality of child, family, staff, and program information.
  • Keep program areas, equipment, toys, and supplies clean, organized, safe, and ready for use.
  • Be familiar with emergency procedures, safety protocols, YMCA policies, and applicable child care licensing rules and regulations.
  • Participate in required orientation, training, and professional development.
  • Maintain required CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by Michigan law and YMCA policy, following all mandated reporting requirements.
  • Model appropriate behavior and demonstrate the YMCA values in all interactions with children, families, members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with positive promotion of YMCA programs and services to members and the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC HOURS

Before and after school hours will vary by program and site location. Hours may include early mornings, afternoons, school breaks, professional development, special events, and summer programming as scheduled.

ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a variety of environments including classrooms, gymnasiums, playgrounds, outdoor areas, and other YMCA or program-approved spaces. The position involves frequent interaction with children, families, YMCA members, staff, and the community.

Employees are advised on OSHA Standards through required signage and administrative updates as compliant with federal law.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • 2. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 3. Experience working with children preferred.
  • 4. Required to be completed in the first 30 days of employment:
  • Certifications: Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Child abuse prevention training
  • 5. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with children, families, and coworkers.
  • 6. Must be able to participate in active, age-appropriate activities with children.
  • 7. Must maintain compliance with all applicable Michigan Child Care Licensing qualifications.
