Job summary

SMOC is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant for our orthopedic practice in southeastern Virginia. This on-site role supports physicians and clinical staff by preparing patients for examinations, assisting during procedures, and handling a mix of administrative tasks.

You will also work with insurance providers to obtain prior authorizations, requiring strong communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced, patient‑focused environment.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in a medical office or clinical setting preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
• Professional and calm in confidential or high-pressure situations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• EMR experience with AthenaHealth is a plus.
• Certification in Medical Assisting not required.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients and prepare them for examination by taking injury histories.
• Coordinate x-ray needs per physician guidance.
• Assist with casts, splints, injections, sutures, dressings, and ultrasound.
• Convey physician orders accurately.
• Operate office and clinical software and equipment as needed.
• Facilitate lab specimens and place electronic orders as directed by the physician.
• Ensure patients understand follow-up instructions before leaving.
• Maintain clean and organized exam rooms and workspaces.
• Handle calls, voicemails, emails, and patient correspondence.
• Apply practice insurance policies appropriately in patient care situations.
• Maintain physician dictations and ensure accurate patient records.
• Adhere to OSHA and HIPAA guidelines.
