Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry required.
  • Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire from American Heart Association.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) required at hire.
  • Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date required.

Responsibilities

  • Examines patients having a full range of visual problems using optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnoses visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies and prescribes treatment.
  • Prescribes and fits contact lenses.
  • Determines visual requirements of the partially sighted and prescribes low-vision aids.
  • Interprets ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications; collaborates with other providers as needed.
  • Refers patients to Kaiser Permanente providers for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participates in department/ facility meetings and peer reviews; consults with internal medicine, pediatrics and ophthalmology.
  • Evaluates and manages stated anterior segment disorders under physician standing orders and with ophthalmologist co-management.
