Job summary

Roadrunner in Downers Grove, IL is seeking an experienced Operations Research & Applied AI Engineer to design and scale optimization and AI solutions for freight planning. The role combines mathematical optimization with applied AI to improve today’s systems and to identify future opportunities.

You will translate business needs into models, deploy AI in production, and collaborate with Operations, Pricing, Sales, and Leadership to deliver measurable impact.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years applying mathematical optimization to production problems.
• Proficiency with mixed-integer programming and at least one solver like SCIP, Gurobi, or CPLEX.
• Experience with production AI and large language models preferred.
• Strong Python and SQL skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, maintain optimization models for network planning and allocation.
• Develop AI applications that automate processes and support decisions.
• Identify opportunities, build business cases, and prototype to production.
• Benchmark outputs against real results and maintain validation infrastructure.
• Engage stakeholders across Operations, Pricing, Sales, and Leadership.
