J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA, is seeking an Opticianry Skills Laboratory Assistant to support laboratory activities, assemble and distribute skills kits for distance-learning students, and maintain optical equipment.

Regular on-campus attendance is required to assist hands-on instruction and clinical operations. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, an Opticianry AAS or DLI certification, one year of relevant experience, and a Virginia State Optician

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Virginia State Optician License.

Responsibilities

  • This position provides in-person support for the operation of the Opticianry Program laboratories, clinical, and instructional spaces.
  • Prepares clinical activities, assembles, disassembly, and distribution of skills kits for distance-learning students, maintains equipment, and manages inventory.
  • Supports faculty and students during laboratory sessions and ensures a safe, organized learning environment.

This is a part-time hourly position without state benefits. Wage employees are restricted to working approximately 29 hours per week or less, not to exceed 1,500 hours annually.

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia's capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Opticianry Skills Laboratory Assistant provides in-person support for the operation of the Opticianry Program laboratories, clinical, and instructional spaces. This position is responsible for preparing clinical activities, assembling, disassembly, and distribution of skills kits for distance-learning students, routine maintenance of optical equipment, laboratory and clinical inventory management, supporting faculty and students during laboratory sessions, and ensuring a safe, organized, and effective learning environment. The position requires regular on-campus attendance to support hands‑on instruction, laboratory and clinical operations, and the preparation of materials for students enrolled in both face‑to‑face and distance education courses.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Opticianry AAS Degree or Dept. Of Labor and Industry Apprenticeship Certification
  • One year of experience in optical dispensing, retail optical services, healthcare, laboratory operations, technical support, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to organize materials, maintain records, and follow detailed procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Virginia State Optician License
Additional Considerations
  • American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Certification.
  • National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) Certification.
  • OSHA or workplace safety training.
Operation of a State Vehicle

No Supervises Employees No Required Travel

Travel between campuses as needed.

Must be able to work on‑site during regularly scheduled laboratory and program hours.

This is a restricted position that is dependent upon funding. The availability of funding is scheduled to end on June 30, 2029, but may be extended based on the continuation of funding. Continued employment is contingent upon funding availability.
