Job summary

Reynolds Community College is seeking an Opticianry Skills Laboratory Assistant to provide in-person support for the Opticianry Program laboratories, clinical, and instructional spaces. The role involves preparing materials, assembling/disassembling skills kits, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe learning environment on campus.

The position requires regular on-site attendance to support hands-on instruction for both face-to-face and distance education courses.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Opticianry AAS Degree or DOL Apprenticeship Certification required.
• One year of experience in optical dispensing, retail optical services, healthcare, lab operations, technical support, or equipment maintenance.
• Ability to organize materials, maintain records, and follow detailed procedures.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Prepare clinical activities and assemble/disassemble skills kits for distance-learning students.
• Perform routine maintenance of optical equipment.
• Manage laboratory and clinical inventory.

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. The Opticianry Skills Laboratory Assistant provides in-person support for the operation of the Opticianry Program laboratories, clinical, and instructional spaces. This position is responsible for preparing clinical activities, assembling, disassembly, and distribution of skills kits for distance-learning students, routine maintenance of optical equipment, laboratory and clinical inventory management, supporting faculty and students during laboratory sessions, and ensuring a safe, organized, and effective learning environment. The position requires regular on‑campus attendance to support hands‑on instruction, laboratory and clinical operations, and the preparation of materials for students enrolled in both face‑to‑face and distance education courses.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED .
• Opticianry AAS Degree or Dept. Of Labor and Industry Apprenticeship Certification
• One year of experience in optical dispensing, retail optical services, healthcare, laboratory operations, technical support, and equipment maintenance.
• Ability to organize materials, maintain records, and follow detailed procedures.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Considerations

• American Board of Opticianry ( ABO ) Certification.
• National Contact Lens Examiners ( NCLE ) Certification.
• OSHA or workplace safety training.

Additional Information

Must be able to work on‑site during regularly scheduled laboratory and program hours.

This is a restricted position that is dependent upon funding. The availability of funding is scheduled to end on June 30, 2029, but may be extended based on the continuation of funding. Continued employment is contingent upon funding availability.
