Job summary

University of Rochester's Ophthalmology Optical department seeks a certified optician to join our patient-centered team. You will fill prescriptions, fit eyewear, and advise on lenses, coatings, and frames to meet each patient’s needs.

Responsibilities include measuring eye-related dimensions, performing lensometry checks, processing transactions, coordinating with labs, and assisting with contact lens fittings when applicable. NYS ABO certification and NCLE required on hire.

Qualifications

• Associate degree required with 1 year of related patient-contact experience.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred with 5 years of experience or equivalent.
• Certified Optician-ABO and NYS license on hire, NCLE certification for fittings.

Responsibilities

• Fills ophthalmic eyeglass prescriptions and adjusts eyewear to patient satisfaction.
• Measures bridge, eye size, vertex distance, and other optical parameters.
• Performs invoicing, cash handling, and coordinates with labs and suppliers.
• Assists patients in frame selection and provides care instructions for glasses/contacts.
• Prepares work orders and may coordinate with lab technicians for fabrication.
• Maintains retail inventory and supports trunk shows and events.
