SouthCoast Health Eye Care Dept. is seeking a part-time Ophthalmic Technician/Patient Representative to support ophthalmologist exams and patient care at 1326 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA. Responsibilities include patient intake, testing, and education.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent; Ophthalmic Assisting certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year ophthalmic technician experience preferred.
  • Ability to read tonometry, lensometry, keratometry, and pupil evaluations.
  • Experience with patient intake, records, and insurance information.

Responsibilities

  • Screen patients for medical and ocular history and chief complaint.
  • Perform refractometry and determine optical correction.
  • Measure visual acuity, color vision, stereopsis, glare test, Amsler grid and Confrontation Fields.
  • Prepare and assist in lasers and minor office surgical procedures.
  • Return patient calls promptly and coordinate walk-in exams with physician schedule.
  • Call in refills to pharmacy and eyeglass prescriptions to optical shops.
  • Assist patients with exam process and access for diagnostic areas; support off-site offices as needed.
  • Prepare for office surgery and instruct patients on post-op care.

Ophthalmic Technician/PRN (As Needed)
Department: Eye Care
Location: 1326 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA

SOUTHCOAST HEALTH EYE CARE DEPT. IS LOOKING FOR A PART-TIME OPHTHALMIC TECH/PATIENT REPRESENTATIVE

Responsible for accurate accumulation of patient information and specified testing in preparing patient for ophthalmologist exam and assisting ophthalmologist in patient care and education, accomplished through patient care and efficient office flow. Will also be responsible for greeting patients and families, prepares and collects necessary documentation, verifies and updates patient information, monitors patient wait time, and communicates with physician clinical stations of patient's arrival.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of health care field.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to accurately read tonometry, lensometry, keratometry and pupil evaluation.
  • Ability to accurately and efficiently record ophthalmologist exams from verbal communication to patient records.
  • Knowledge of reception tasks, clinic policies/procedures, paperwork.
  • Knowledge in use of computers for data verification and entry purposes.
  • Ability to deal with many tasks at one time with flexibility.
  • Ability to perform assistance tasks appropriately.
  • Skill in communication, tact and customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Screening patients for medical and ocular history and chief complaint.
  • Refractometry by objective testing with optical lens and accurate optical correction of eye.
  • Measurement of visual acuity, color vision, stereopsis, glare test (Contrast sensitivity), Amsler grid and Confrontation Fields. Determining by objective testing what combination of optical lenses results in optical correction of the eye. Preparing and assisting in lasers and minor office surgical procedures.
  • Returns patient calls in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Coordinate work-in exams with physician schedule. Call in medical refills to pharmacy and eyeglass prescriptions to optical shops.
  • Assures customer needs are met and where possible exceeded. Assists physically handicapped, visually handicapped, pediatric and geriatric patients with exam process, including facilitation of patient access to diagnostic area.
  • Prepares for office surgery (removal of chalazion, etc.) including preparing the instruments and the patient before the surgery. After surgery, duties include instructing the patient or family member on how to instill drops or proper care of the surgical area.
  • Assists in pre-operative testing by accurately performing measurement of corneal thickness (corneal pachymetry). Accurately performs measurement of corneal curvature and contour (topography and keratotomy). Accurately performs measurement of visual acuity, eye pressure, and refractive error. Accurately performs A-Scans.
  • Communicates with and assists physicians, patients and coworkers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Must be able to travel to and assist in outlying offices as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Performs or assists with other clinical or non-clinical duties, as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
  • Provides patient with either necessary paper forms or Phreesia tablet for patient to complete check‑in process and accurately updates necessary insurance or demographic information.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High school education required or equivalent Certification of Ophthalmic Assisting through JCAHPO preferred. Minimum of 1 year required as an ophthalmic technician in a Physician's office preferred.
