Responsibilities
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients
  • Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines
  • Perform pre-exam testing, including visual acuity assessment, confrontation visual field testing, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assessment of angles, pupillary dilation, and specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, and dry eye testing
  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, OCT, and optical biometry
  • Support training efforts of other clinical staff as needed
  • Assist with fitting contact lenses and instruct patients on care and insertion
  • Complete prescription refill requests as authorized by physicians, with documentation
  • Educate patients on medication administration and pre/post-operative instructions
  • Maintain clinical equipment and inventory of medications and supplies
  • Assist with surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office
  • Ensure exam lanes are prepared and equipment is maintained and cleaned daily
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Proficient with ophthalmic terminology and clinical skills
  • Minimum of five years as an ophthalmic technician
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) and Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) required
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic surgical procedures and billing/coding is preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, and computer skills
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform multitasking efficiently
