Job summary

Duke Health is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to support a Duke Eye Center physician under close supervision. You will perform diagnostic tests and help evaluate eye conditions, contributing to compassionate patient care. This role focuses on accuracy, patient comfort, and teamwork.

The schedule is day shifts, Monday–Friday, with no weekends or holidays. Training will cover equipment use and clerical tasks, including charting and appointment coordination, within a supportive eye-care setting.

Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary screening examinations and tests as directed (visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, color vision).
• Direct the flow of patients and collect data for charts; arrange for tests, photography, admissions and procedures as requested by physician.
• Examine cornea, lens, and anterior chamber with a slit lamp and note deviations from normal.
• May administer dilation or anesthetic drops and assist with contact lens training.
• Explain procedures to patients and support family understanding; assist with stocking and room maintenance.
• Complete clerical tasks including appointments and filing results.
