Qualifications

  • Education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
  • Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO; Must have BLS Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Under close supervision perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review; include visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, refraction.
  • Examine cornea, lens, and anterior chamber using a slit lamp; note variations; may administer dilation or anesthetic drops.
  • Stock and maintain exam rooms; manage supplies; assist with sterilization and instrument transport.
  • Assist with clerical tasks: appointments, phone screening, messages, charting prescriptions; file test results.
  • Demonstrate professional and courteous interactions; maintain patient confidentiality and uphold respectful workplace environment.
  • Support own professional development and assist in staff training.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

High school education or equivalent
Graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO; BLS certification
