Job summary

Duke Eye Center at Erwin Rd in Durham, NC is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to support Eye Center physicians and staff in diagnostic testing for eye problems.

Under close supervision, you will assist with various tests, screen exams, measure acuity, fit contact lenses, and maintain equipment while preparing patient charts. The schedule is day shifts, Monday–Friday, with no weekends or holidays.

Qualifications

  • Education: high school education or equivalent.
  • Experience: 1 year of directly related ophthalmology or optometry experience.
  • Degrees, Licensure: N/A

Responsibilities

  • Assist Eye Center physicians and other staff to perform diagnostic tests for eye problems.
  • Conduct preliminary screening exams for physician review, including central and peripheral visual field tests, color vision tests, and tonometry.
  • Examine cornea, lens and anterior chamber using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
  • Measure acuity with/without glasses; obtain lensometry measurements and record findings.
  • Assist physician to fit patients with contact lenses and calibrate/maintain instruments; stock rooms.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Ophthalmic Assistant. Under close supervision, assist the Eye Center physicians and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Under close supervision assist an Eye Center physician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems.
  • Under close supervision perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests; simple color vision tests; indentation and applanation tonometry tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.
  • Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
  • Measure acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; record findings on patient chart. Administer Electro-Retinogram and Electro-Oculogram tests to patients.
  • Obtain medical and personal data for patient charts.
  • Assist the physician to fit patients with contact lenses.
  • Calibrate and maintain all instruments used including, but not limited to, biomicroscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers; clean and stock consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements

  • Education: Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • Experience: Work requires 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry
  • Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: N/A
