Job summary

Duke Health in Durham, NC is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to support Eye Center physicians and staff. Under close supervision, you will perform diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, and pupil assessment, and may administer dilation or anesthetic drops.

Qualifications

  • Education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry; OR graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
  • Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by JCAHPO; BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Participates in patient care under supervision, performing preliminary screenings such as visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields; may perform refraction.
  • Maintains and stocks exam rooms, cleans and prepares supplies, ships instruments for sterilization, and ensures proper calibration and maintenance of equipment.
  • Answers phones, screens calls, assists with appointments and records prescriptions in patient charts.
  • Demonstrates courteous, confidential, and respectful interactions with patients, visitors, and staff; upholds privacy and professional conduct.
  • Assists with ongoing professional development and supports training of other staff and learners.
  • Performs related duties incidental to the work described herein.
