Job summary

Cal State LA is seeking an Operations Associate for the University-Student Union to provide maintenance support and guest safety. The position is non-exempt and paid hourly at $18.88, with an academic-year schedule and potential extension.

The role requires up to 20 hours per week and a two-month training period. Responsibilities include opening/closing, cleaning, equipment operation, and assisting events, with background checks and campus policy compliance expected.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled Cal State LA student with a minimum of 6 units undergraduate units and a minimum GPA 2.0, or graduate student with at least 4 graduate units and GPA 3.0.
  • Willingness to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body and staff.
  • Ability to interact positively and build effective working relationships.
  • Willingness to provide effective customer service promptly and courteously.
  • Ability to respond to walk-in and other inquiries.

  • Previous experience with custodial work and maintenance tools.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the opening and closing of the U-SU operations.
  • Assists staff with daily projects and events and with guiding Operations Assistants on projects.
  • Assists guests and provides access to alarmed areas.
  • Performs routine cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and maintenance of the facility.
  • Operates and maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Empties trash, sweeps, dusts, vacuums, spot cleans; cleans restrooms, floors, walls, windows, mirrors, and polishes furniture.
  • Performs carpet cleaning, floor stripping, waxing, and steam cleaning.
  • Assists with moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment.
  • Reports unusual occurrences to supervisors and provides quality customer service.
  • Maintains awareness of University activities and events; welcomes guests and directs them to resources.

Job description

Hourly Rate:$18.88 per hour; non-exempt classification

Duration: Academic Year (Fall/Spring) with the possibility of extension

Work Schedule: Up to 20 hours/week (no more than 999 hours per calendar year). Schedule developed with the Operations Coordinator

Training Period: Two months with the possibility of extension

General Statement:

Under the general supervision of the Operations Coordinator, the Operations Associate provides maintenance support to the University-Student Union (U-SU). The Operations Associate is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the facility, its contents, as well as guests.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the opening, closing, and evening hours for the operations of the U-SU;
  • Assists staff with daily projects and events, and may assist staff with leading Operations Assistants individually and on projects;
  • Assists guests of the U-SU and provides access to alarmed areas;
  • Performs routine tasks in cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and maintaining the U-SU facility;
  • Operates and maintains equipment and supplies;
  • Empties trash receptacles, sweeps, dusts, vacuums, and spot cleans;
  • Cleans restrooms, floors, walls, windows, mirrors, dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork, and restocks supplies;
  • Performs vacuuming, carpet cleaning, floor stripping, waxing, and steam cleaning;
  • Assists with moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment;
  • Performs non-technical repairs and maintenance;
  • Reports any unusual occurrences to supervisors;
  • Provides quality customer service to the University community;
  • Provides information about the University-Student Union and the University to the campus community;
  • Greets all guests and directs guests to the appropriate resource;
  • Maintains an awareness of all University-Student Union and University activities and events;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled Cal State LA student with a minimum of 6 units undergraduate units and a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0, or graduate student with at least 4 graduate units and a minimum Cal State LA cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0;

  • Previous experience using various maintenance equipment, desktop and web-based applications, and office equipment;
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds;
  • Ability to perform tasks involving regular physical activity;
  • Previous experience with methods, materials, and equipment for custodial work;
  • Previous experience with proper use, care, operation, and safety procedures of maintenance tools;
  • Previous experience as an Operations Assistant or equivalent;

A background check/live scan (including a criminal record check) must be completed satisfactorily for an employment offer to remain valid. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or the continued employment of current employees who apply for the position required.
