Job summary

The Mount Sinai Health System seeks a Certified Surgical Technician in New York. The role supports the operating room team by scrubbing, gowning and gloving, and preparing sterile fields.

You will assist surgeons, monitor asepsis, and help transfer and dress patients throughout surgical procedures. Requirements include a High School diploma and CST training with OR certification; OR experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Graduation from Certified CST Training Program.
• Certification in Operating Room Technology required.

Responsibilities

• Applies principles and practices of asepsis; performs surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedure.
• Sets up sterile instrument table and prepares supplies according to type of operation.
• Assists and anticipates needs of surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies; observes patient and prepares for emergencies.
• Maintains correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments with circulating nurse; reports discrepancies.
• Assists in care, handling and disposition of specimen; assists in applying dressings and securing drainage systems.
• Assists in moving patient to appropriate receptacle, decontaminate equipment and clean room as prescribed.
• Assists the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions according to guidelines.
• Assembles necessary supplies; provides special equipment before during and after procedure.
• Observes and protects patient by correct positioning and aseptic environment.
• Positions patient, adjusts table and accessories; prepares operative area and assists in draping.
• Maintains sponge, needle and instrument counts; reports discrepancies to surgical team.
• Observes room activity; controls traffic; maintains and cares for specimens.
• Assists in dressing applications and patient transfer to recovery; prepares for next procedure.
• Assists nurse in preparing medications or solutions to be administered during surgery.
• Saves medication vials/ampules and announces administration details.
• Functions as a professional role model; precepts for students; hires staff.
• Demonstrates accountability for practice; adheres to policies.
• Maintains clinical competence and responsibility for personal development.
• Performs scrub and sterile instrument duties per guidelines.
• Does not dispense narcotics; assists in transportation and storage of equipment.
