Job summary

Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk, VA is seeking a Lead Mechanic Supervisor – Crane and Rigging to oversee skilled trades in the Crane and Rigging Department. The role requires coordinating production, ensuring safety, and maintaining equipment and procedures.

The candidate will train and assign crews, interpret drawings and specifications, and ensure adherence to OSHA standards. Expect extended hours, potential travel, and onsite work at shipyards and industrial facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Registered Apprentice (grad) or HS + 6 years related trade experience (in the trade to be supervised).
• Experience in crane cable removal and installation.
• Ability to understand job specifications, drawings, and technical references.
• Knowledge of OSHA 1915 for Shipyard and OSHA 1926 for Commercial Vessels.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Expert knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments.
• Able to work with others, be a steady, reliable worker, follow complex instructions, and be self-motivated.

Responsibilities

• Execute routine (and non-routine) production duties in support of goals and in compliance with procedures.
• Perform skilled tasking in maintenance, repair, installation/removal, and new construction for ship repair/industrial fabrication operations.
• Assist management to coordinate daily production and ensure crews have tools and procedures for safe work.
• May assist with timekeeping validation, training, performance management, coaching, and supervision.
• Break broader production requirements into practical action plans to support safety, quality, cost, and schedule goals.
• Make recommendations to support Plan of the Day (POD) and allocate resources to meet project requirements.
• Evaluate job sites and work environments before starting to ensure safe setups and efficient evolutions.
• Adhere to contract requirements, drawings, and work instructions.
