Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking an Oncology Data Specialist to join our team. The role provides administrative and executive support and interfaces with management across the hospital to accurately obtain, abstract, and report cancer patient information for the cancer registry.

Responsibilities include case finding, abstracting, coding per NYS and national guidelines, and contributing to accreditation prep for the National Cancer Database.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree required; Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C) required; verification of degree and certification is required.
• At least 1 year of hospital/healthcare setting experience.
• Knowledge of New York State and national cancer coding standards; anatomy and physiology knowledge; advanced medical terminology.
• Excellent computer data entry and writing skills with ability to process high-volume workload.

Responsibilities

• Support accreditation by completing documentation and coding per NCDB requirements.
• Case finding across internal and external sources of cancer-related encounters.
• Abstracting and coding data per NYS and national guidelines in the registry software.
• Quality review and timely correction of abstracting errors.
