Job summary

R1 is seeking a Financial Counselor to assist uninsured and underinsured patients with coverage options and financial assistance. This on-site role travels between hospital floors to meet patients in their rooms, screen for eligibility, help with applications, and explain financial responsibilities with clarity and compassion.

You’ll coordinate with Patient Access and revenue cycle teams, document activity, and maintain patient privacy in a fast-paced hospital setting across Racine, Milwaukee,

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to explain complex information in clear language.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple systems and priorities.
• Ability to work on-site, move between hospital floors, and meet patients in rooms.

Responsibilities

• Travel between hospital floors to meet uninsured and underinsured patients in their rooms to review financial needs.
• Screen for eligibility for Medicaid, Marketplace, hospital financial assistance, and similar programs.
• Help patients complete applications and gather required documents.
• Explain coverage options, application steps, and next steps clearly.
• Discuss patient responsibility and payment options, and assist with collections respectfully.
• Track application status, follow up on missing information, and document activity accurately.
• Protect patient privacy and coordinate with clinical, Patient Access, and revenue cycle teams.
• Balance compassionate service with accuracy and productivity in a fast-paced hospital setting.
