Job summary

Virginia Highlands Community College seeks an Academic Tutor in English & Humanities for MARC, Learning Resources Division. This on-site role supports students enrolled in various subjects, assists faculty and staff, and helps run MARC programs.

The position requires tutoring experience, a B grade in the subjects, and flexibility to work evenings or weekends. Candidates should be detail-oriented, customer-service minded, and proficient in MLA/APA citation and basic AI tools.

Qualifications

• Grade of no less than B in the desired subject; no C, D, F, W, or I.
• Prior tutoring/teaching/student support experience.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes 29 hours per week.
• Detail oriented.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Leadership qualities to manage sessions with students.
• Computer skills including working knowledge of AI and Large Language Models, and citation formatting (MLA/APA), as well as Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

Responsibilities

• Assist students in MARC in English, basic math to Calculus II, chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology.
• Direct students to MARC coordinator to book tutoring appointments.
• Check students in and maintain session records.
• Maintain confidentiality and FERPA compliance.
• Sign in students and assist with MARC programming/events.
• Keep MARC/LRC spaces organized and tidy.
• Answer Teams calls and respond to questions promptly.
