Job summary

The City Colleges of Chicago is seeking a Humanities/Writing Tutor for Harold Washington College to assist students in achieving academic success. This in-person role requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and strong communication skills.

The ideal candidate will maintain student records, conduct outreach, and collaborate with instructors to enhance understanding of course material. Must be available up to 29 hours per week, including evening and weekend availability.

Qualifications

Humanities/ Writing Tutor

We Are Seeking Tutors For

• Writing / Reading (English, Literature, Linguistics, Speech)
• Philosophy (Logic, Intro, Ethics, Aesthetics, Social/Political)
• Psychology (General Psych, Child Psych)

Primary Responsibilities

• Maintain records on each student who is being tutored.
• Conduct student outreach to promote tutoring services.
• Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying and develop a high level of motivation.
• Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and improve academic capabilities.
• Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
• Attend periodic training sessions given by faculty/staff members to increase competency.
• Collaborate with instructors through embedded tutoring to enhance student understanding of course material and increase student engagement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Humanities, English Language and Literature, Creative Writing or similar fields of study.
• Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.
• Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
• Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the postsecondary instructional level is strongly preferred.
• Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a diverse student body.
• Self-directed and able to complete assignments in a timely manner.

This position will be scheduled up to 29 hours per week. This is an in-person role. Must be open to working evenings (Monday-Thursday 5-7pm) and weekends (Friday and Saturday 11am-3pm).
