Job summary

CSUN seeks an on-site Realtime Captioner to provide CART services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, faculty, and guests. Under supervision, you will use a steno machine and real-time software to produce word-for-word captions in live settings such as classrooms and conferences.

Certification in court reporting or CART preferred. Level 1A or 2B, with 6–12 months captioning experience; 2+ years and one of the listed certifications qualify for Level 2B.

Qualifications

• Formal training in court reporting and steno methods; graduation from court reporting school preferred.
• Six to twelve months of experience providing real-time captioning, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Two or more years of captioning experience and one of the listed certifications for Level 2B.

Responsibilities

• Provide communication access real-time translating services (CART) to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals in classrooms, conferences, and other settings.
• Provide complete transcription of spoken words and environmental cues; deliver transcripts electronically or on hard copy.
• Set up and troubleshoot equipment, including steno machine, laptop, and display monitor; maintain software dictionaries.
• Research and expand technical terminology; continually update dictionaries for accurate translation.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
