Job summary

The California State University, Northridge is seeking an On-call Realtime Captioner to provide CART captioning in classrooms and meetings. The role uses a steno machine, real-time software, and a laptop to deliver real-time transcription for Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing participants.

This entry-level to mid-position pays hourly and is part-time, temporary, on-site, with varied hours. Training and certification preferred; successful candidates will work in person on campus in Northridge.

Qualifications

• Formal training in court reporting and steno methods is required, with graduation from a court reporting school preferred.
• Six to twelve months of experience providing real-time captioning services, preferably in a higher education setting.

Responsibilities

• Provides communication access real-time translating services (CART) to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and others, including students, faculty, staff, and guests.
• Provides complete transcription of spoken words and environmental cues; delivers transcript on electronic disk, email, or hard copy.
• Requests and maintains equipment and software for real-time translation, and researches terminology to update dictionaries.
