Job summary

Simpson Housing Services in Minneapolis seeks a direct service staff member for a 24-hour shelter serving single adults. You will help meet essential needs and provide advocacy, support, and guidance to participants in a safe, dignified environment.

Position requires open availability for shifts; duties include on-site shelter operations, safety rounds, crisis de-escalation, and thorough documentation while upholding anti-racism and respectful service.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Adequate written and verbal communication skills.
• Patience, flexibility, ability to listen, compassion and assertiveness.
• Ability to be decisive and effective under pressure and maintain composure in crisis situations.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate on-site shelter operations and communicate with staff and volunteers.
• Greet and support volunteers and meal groups; uphold shelter rules.
• Provide a hospitable, safe, welcoming, non-judgmental environment.
• Remain available and attentive to guests’ needs, including questions and requests.
• Complete rounds to ensure guest safety; deescalate conflicts during crises.
• Document client interactions and maintain confidential records as requested.
• Develop positive relationships with participants, colleagues, and partners; participate in trainings.
