Position Overview

Southwestern University has an immediate opening for the On-Call Custodian position. The position will be on an as-needed basis and will perform all responsibilities in accordance with the standards and instructions established by the department. The On-Call Custodian will perform tasks related to cleaning and maintaining assigned areas. This is an on-call, non-exempt position which is not eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.

Essential Duties
  1. Maintaining all assigned buildings as scheduled by the Supervisor of Custodial Services or through a Lead Custodian.
  2. Familiarity with institutional custodial equipment and cleaning techniques for residential and/or commercial buildings.
  3. Performing cleaning duties such as mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning vents, fixtures, etc.
  4. Maintaining custodial supplies, equipment, and closets in a neat and organized manner.
  5. Gathering and emptying trash outside assigned buildings.
  6. Safeguarding keys and university property.
  7. Inspecting and maintaining equipment, reporting needs for repairs.
  8. Observing and reporting to supervisors any defects, deterioration, or wear and tear of facilities.
  9. Working weekends or longer hours as needed for emergencies, events, or deadlines.
  10. Ability to lift and handle up to 50 lbs.
  11. Participating in safety training programs.
  12. Assisting other departments with approved training when needed.
  13. Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 6 months to 1 year of custodial experience.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Compliance with safety programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks reliably.
  • Flexibility and reliability.
  • Availability to work weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge and compliance with university safety regulations.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, reaching.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2-3 years of custodial experience.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license, good DMV record, meeting insurance standards.
