Job summary

Review all corrective action by lower-level roles and follow-up with directors on findings. Monitor daily workflows of team and process samples meticulously to avoid cross-contamination. Monitor and meet established turn-around-time deadlines for clinical testing. Assist supervisor/directors to ensure all routine maintenance of laboratory equipment is performed as required. Effectively communicate with laboratory members, investigators, physicians, stakeholders, including Executive and Advisory Board members, to ensure seamless communication and act as designee in scientific meetings as needed.Ensures accurate recording of relevant data and values in case folders and internal databases. Direct documentation according to CAP/CLIA and institutional SOPs. Review to ensure complete and accurate logging of sample receipt, aliquoting, and storage in the LIMS to maintain traceability across all omics workflows. Assist Medical Director and team to accurately and precisely analyze molecular assay results for final interpretation by medical staff. Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies and good clinical laboratory practice in areas of procedures, quality control, quality assurance and safety and compliance. Oversee all technical aspects of research and clinical projects, participate in and review new assay development plans.rain new lab members and/or sign off on competency documents. Demonstrate and set an example for excellent organizational skills and time management to process large batches of samples efficiently while maintaining accuracy and compliance under strict turnaround-time requirements. Assist Lab Management by contributing and at times perform as designee on all cross-platform QA/QC efforts, ensuring harmonization of standards across genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics workflows.

Job Summary

Directs day-to-day laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Works with, adapts, and installs scientific equipment in research laboratories. Develops moderately complex projects and procedures independently. Manages inventory and equipment and performs budget functions. Collaborates to write grant applications and manuscripts.

Essential Functions

The University of Pittsburgh is establishing a state-of-the-art, multi-omics facility to support research and clinical translational programs in multiple OMICS disciplines including genomic sequencing, methylation, proteomics, metagenomics, and RNA sequencing. We are seeking a highly motivated expert level technician who is a team player with experience in these areas. This expert level role will be expected to be able to perform any and all duties of lower-level roles in addition to the following: Independently perform and oversee clinical testing in accordance with established SOPs. Process all clinical, QC and PT specimens through clinical workflow. Demonstrate expert-level problem-solving skills and analytical abilities to successfully perform laboratory testing with little to no supervision and report findings to Directors. Independently setup, program, troubleshoot, and operate automated and/or liquid handling machines for clinical testing, including high-throughput sample preparation and assay setup. Continue to learn new and advanced technologies while maintaining expertise in or knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to:

  • nucleic acid isolation
  • nucleic acid quantitation
  • PCR/RT-PCR/qPCR
  • Sanger sequencing
  • LOH
  • methylation analysis
  • MassARRAY MALDI-TOF
  • next-generation sequencing

etc.

Maintain track of technical and professional development, including but not limited to attendance at seminars/webinars and participation in educational programs and activities. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, and/or supplies and follow-up with directors, vendors, etc. according to established protocols. Identify critical, abnormal and/or unacceptable results and follow-up according to established protocol and recommend optimizations and workflow changes to address the issues.

Physical Effort

Walking around campus. Reading small fonts on tubes and vials. Sitting and standing for long periods. Working under standard office and laboratory lighting. Bending and lifting to put away supplies. Lifting up to 40 pounds. Able to walk a minimum of 2 flights of stairs.
