Position Details
- Position: Part‑time Night Shift OB Surgical Technologist
- Schedule: Two 12‑hour night shifts per week (7:00 pm – 7:30 am)
- Unit: 10‑bed Labor & Delivery unit with 2 OR suites
- Hospital: St. Joseph Medical Center – 253‑bed acute care hospital with level II trauma center
- Location: Bellingham, WA – scenic city on Bellingham Bay with Mount Baker, 45 min south of Vancouver, BC and 90 mi north of Seattle
Essential Functions
- Arrange and inventory sterile set‑up for operations and pass items as needed to the surgical team.
- Apply asepsis principles; establish and maintain sterile field and ensure team adheres to it.
- Assist with patient preparation, movement, and turning of rooms.
- Cleans, disinfects, sterilizes instruments; assist with room turnover.
- Assist in vaginal births.
- Access computer information such as preference lists and digital images.
- Maintain unit supplies – requisition, receive, stock rooms and supply areas; manage inventory control.
- Participate in safety initiatives, including SCIP and SCOAP quality programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or recognized training course.
- Minimum one year experience as a Surgical Technologist, preferably with obstetrical and gynecologic surgeries.
- Knowledge of age‑specific growth and development principles for patient care.
- Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration.
- Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
Required Skills
- Well organized, detail oriented, and self‑motivated.
- Ability to coordinate activities and collaborate with others.
- Ability to execute detailed procedures accurately and precisely.
- Basic computer/key‑boarding skills, including MS Office.
- Understanding of operating‑room protocols.
Working Conditions
- Patient handling: No greater than 35 lbs without equipment.
- Physical demands: Frequent lifting up to 15 lbs, occasionally 20 lbs; push/pull up to 20 lbs frequently, up to 30 lbs occasionally; frequent reaching, bending, squatting, kneeling, grasping.
- Environmental exposure: Biohazard, body fluids, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals.
- Vision/hearing: Normal limits required; glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted.
