Job summary

UCI Health is seeking a Nursing Assistant to support professional nursing staff by performing essential patient-care duties and clerical tasks on a hospital unit. The role includes taking vital signs, assisting with hygiene, mobility and daily living activities, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.

You will collaborate with RNs to ensure quality patient care, while following safety protocols and participating in routine POCT quality controls. BLS certification is required at hire.

Qualifications

• Understanding of basic medical terminology.
• Must be able to read, write and speak effectively in English.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
• Must be Certified Nurses Assist. or enrolled in accredited nursing prog. with completion of at least 1 clinical semester.
• Demonstrated patient care experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
• Nursing Assistants hired prior to May 2010 who did not possess certification as a Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) are not required to obtain it at this time.
• Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively in a therapeutic way.
• Current BLS certification upon hire (must be issued by the AHA).
• Approved workplace violence responder training program within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Accurately measures and records vital signs.
• Assists with patient care activities as directed by the RN, including specimen collection, turning & positioning, and patient transportation.
• Assists patient with hygiene, elimination, routine skin care, comfort measures and other Activities of Daily Living (ADL), in consideration of patient age, gender, culture and stated preferences, maintaining patient privacy and respect at all times.
• Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean & safe environment.
• Demonstrates independent judgement and decision making.
• Receives, accurately inventories, and sends patient belongings when appropriate. Performs Point of Care Testing (POCT) Quality Controls per standards as required.
