Nurse Practitioner - Pediatric Oncology/BMT (CPNP-AC Required)

Location: San Francisco, CA

Position Summary:

Virtus Healthcare Staffing is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC) to join the esteemed Pediatric Oncology program at our partner, a leading children's medical facility in San Francisco, CA. This advanced practice role is pivotal, serving as a key liaison between physicians and nurses, and functioning as an independent member of the interdisciplinary team. The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for the safe and comprehensive delivery of care primarily to inpatient pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients, with some responsibilities for ambulatory patient care follow-up. This position requires a strong clinical foundation, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to family-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive, high-level clinical care to pediatric patients with oncologic and hematologic conditions, including those undergoing bone marrow transplantation.
  • Perform thorough patient assessments, including history taking and physical examinations, for both inpatient and follow-up ambulatory settings.
  • Develop, implement, and manage evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with attending physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate differential diagnoses, and manage acute and chronic illnesses related to pediatric oncology/BMT.
  • Prescribe and manage medications and therapeutic interventions within the scope of practice and established protocols.
  • Perform or assist with procedures as credentialed and appropriate for the pediatric oncology/BMT population.
  • Provide expert consultation, education, and support to patients, families, and nursing staff regarding disease processes, treatment plans, symptom management, and supportive care.
  • Coordinate patient care across the continuum, facilitating smooth transitions between inpatient and outpatient settings, and collaborating with community resources.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds, case conferences, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Meet productivity expectations as set forth by divisional leadership, performing duties related to patient care activities that are appropriate and clearly delineated.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's Degree in Nursing with a specialization as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC).
  • Certification:
    • Current and active Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care (CPNP-AC) certification is mandatory for consideration.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Licensure:
    • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of California.
    • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the State of California.
    • Current Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number from the State of California (or eligibility).
    • DEA registration (or eligibility).
  • Experience Pathway (One of the following):
    • Nurse Practitioner I an II level requirements, experience dependent:
      • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience working as an RN in a Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) or Pediatric Oncology unit, OR
      • Minimum of six (6) months of direct Nurse Practitioner experience in a Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) or Pediatric Oncology unit.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team, patients, and families.
    • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and decision-making abilities.
    • Leadership skills and the ability to function independently within a team structure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • More extensive Nurse Practitioner experience specifically within pediatric oncology and/or BMT.
  • APHON (Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses) certification (e.g., CPHON, BMTCN) for prior RN role, or as an NP.
  • Experience with chemotherapy administration and management of its side effects.
