Job summary

Methodist Hospitals is seeking a nurse extern who will work under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor to gain confidence in critical thinking and clinical skills. The role emphasizes patient-centered care, adherence to the Nurse Practice Act, and aligning with the hospital's standards and values.

The extern will develop clinical judgement and problem-solving techniques while supporting an interdisciplinary care plan and comprehensive documentation in the EMR.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled nursing student in good standing or a graduate preparing for NCLEX.
• Must have completed Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing (or equivalent) didactic and lab.
• Current school registration or proof of graduation required.
• BLS certification is required.
• Indiana licensing must be secured within 60 days of graduation.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic patient care tasks such as measuring and recording vitals, intake/output, mobility, nutrition, hygiene, comfort and safety.
• Assist in performing various therapeutic procedures.
• Contribute to the patient’s interdisciplinary plan of care under a RN preceptor.
• Provide education to patient and family regarding care.
• Document all patient care activities in the EMR per policy.
• Performs other duties as needed.
