Job summary

Aurora Health Care is seeking a Nurse Extern under the direct supervision of an RN to develop foundational patient care skills and support safe, age-appropriate care. The extern assists with transport, admissions, discharges, and other workflow activities as assigned.

Minimum requirements include active enrollment in an accredited nursing program with a minimum 2.5 GPA and completion of foundational nursing coursework.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program with good academic standing; minimum 2.5 GPA.
• Must have completed foundational nursing coursework prior to supervised clinical practice.
• Must complete orientation and competency validation programs on hire.

Responsibilities

• Supports patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, and personal care.
• Assists patients with mobility and hygiene needs under RN direction.
• Obtains and documents routine clinical measurements and reports abnormalities to the RN.
• Supports nutrition and hydration and monitors diet tolerance per RN guidance.
• Maintains clean and safe patient environment and infection prevention standards.
• Observes changes in patient condition and reports to RN to support clinical decisions.
• Reinforces patient/family education and prepares patients for tests or procedures as directed by RN.
• Performs clerical tasks and supports unit communication and workflow.
• Manages patient-care supplies and equipment inventory and upkeep.
• Performs competency-validated skills such as ECGs, venipuncture, and specimen collection under RN supervision.
