Job summary

UT Health East Texas is seeking a Nurse Extern on a variable shift (PRN) to work under direct supervision of a registered nurse, gaining hands-on patient care experience in a supportive, learning-focused environment.

You will perform basic nursing tasks, report patient conditions, and help maintain equipment and unit cleanliness, while demonstrating care appropriate to the age of patients on your unit. Enrollment in an accredited nursing program is required with completion within 24 months.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; must be enrolled in an Accredited Nursing Program with anticipated completion within 24 months from date of hire.
• Academic standing in your Accredited Nursing Program is REQUIRED.
• Medical Technology; Anatomy and Physiology background.
• Must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in a professional nursing program.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Perform functions under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
• Carry out basic nursing tasks including patient care and reporting patient conditions.
• Maintain equipment and unit cleanliness; provide care appropriate to the age of patients on the unit.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for performing functions as authorized under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
• In addition, performs basic nursing tasks to include patient care, reporting patient conditions, circumstances, and maintaining equipment and unit cleanliness.
• The nurse extern must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

Conditions: May be required to work irregular schedules. Potential exposure to hazard materials/situations to include but not limited to, blood-borne pathogens, ionizing radiation, and communicable diseases.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent; must be enrolled in an Accredited Nursing Program with an anticipated completion from program within 24 months from date of hire.
