This is a non-state service time limited position. The Mississippi State Department of Health is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to serve as a Nurse Consultant for the Central Region within the Immunization Program. This is a time-limited (Ns-14) Nurse Team Lead position providing leadership, supervision, and program oversight for Immunization Representatives assigned to Districts 3, 5, and 6.This is a public health nursing leadership position focused on immunization program operations, provider oversight, quality assurance, staff development, and regulatory compliance. The Nurse Consultant will supervise and support field staff responsible for monitoring providers enrolled in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Immunization Quality Improvement for Providers (IQIP) programs.Responsibilities include supervising and evaluating Immunization Representatives; conducting performance coaching; orienting and training new staff; managing workloads and coverage; reviewing site-visit documentation for consistency with CDC and MSDH requirements; providing technical assistance on vaccine management and provider compliance; responding to escalated provider issues; and coordinating with district leadership and county health departments.The position also assists with VFC and IQIP visits, follow-up activities, corrective action reviews, statewide meetings, staff training, and implementation of updated CDC and MSDH immunization policies and procedures. The Central Region encompasses Districts 3, 5, and 6 and includes a substantial share of Mississippi's VFC provider network
The ideal candidate will be able to lead people while keeping a complex field operation moving. This position requires strong communication, organization, judgment, and problem-solving skills; the ability to coach and develop staff; attention to regulatory and documentation requirements; and the ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities. The position also requires someone comfortable serving as a resource to staff and healthcare providers, addressing complex or escalated program issues, adapting to changing public health guidance, and maintaining consistency across multiple districts.
Typically requires state licensure as a Registered Nurse and 2-4+ years of experience as a Registered Nurse.Preference may be given to applicants with experience in:Public health nursing, immunization services, or vaccine-related programsSupervising, leading, mentoring, or training professional staffVaccines for Children (VFC), IQIP, vaccine storage and handling, or provider complianceConducting provider visits, quality assurance reviews, or regulatory/compliance activitiesInterpreting and applying state and federal program requirementsWorkload management, staff performance monitoring, and technical assistanceWorking collaboratively with healthcare providers, public health partners, county health departments, and multidisciplinary teams
