Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking an undergraduate intern to support the Advanced Test Reactor by developing the technical basis for pressure relief valves and contributing to preventative maintenance interval justification. The role is ideal for students who enjoy applying engineering fundamentals to reactor systems, reading technical requirements, and assisting with safe, reliable operations.

The team works a 4x10 schedule on-site at the ATR campus.

Qualifications

Enrolled full time as an undergraduate in an ABET-accredited engineering program (Mechanical, Nuclear, Industrial, Chemical, Reliability, Systems, or Materials Science & Engineering).
Minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT/OPT).
Interest or experience with pressure boundary systems, ASME code concepts, or technical calculations.

Responsibilities

Review design docs, system drawings, operating requirements, and historical maintenance data for pressure relief valves.
Develop and refine the technical basis behind valve setpoints, sizing, code requirements, and system interfaces.
Support PM Basis development, including interval justification.
Analyze historical performance trends, work orders, and component failure data.
Assist engineers with walkdowns, equipment verification, and configuration checks.
Prepare technical documentation, calculations, and engineering memos.
