Job summary

American Electric Power offers a Summer Internship Program for engineering students. The 10–12 week, paid internship is based in Bridgman, Michigan, with a $1,500/month housing stipend for those relocating.

Applicants must be pursuing an ABET-accredited Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degree, be freshman-level or higher, and set to graduate Dec 2027 or later. Sponsorship, OPT, CPT are not available.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering in an ABET-accredited program.
• Must have completed at least your freshman year.
• Graduation date of December 2027 or later.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Not eligible for sponsorship, OPT, or CPT.
• Willingness and ability to relocate for the summer to internship locations.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Interest in the electric utility sector, energy efficiency and sustainability practices.
• Effective time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborating with project teams and experienced engineers on planning, designing and executing enterprise projects.
• Engaging in design reviews, training sessions and constructability assessments.
• Participate in field visits to understand power system operations and assist in inspections and tests.
• Assist in developing databases, reports, cost estimates and dashboards.
• Support documentation for decision-making and safety initiatives.
• Embrace AEP’s safety culture in office and field environments.
• Expand engineering skills through new challenges.
