Job summary

Job Summary

Full‑time, 40‑hour position with 3–13 hour shifts, D/N rotations, and weekend/holiday coverage. Working under the supervision of Cardiac Surgeons and Heart Center Intensivists, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will care for patients on the Cardiac Surgical Service, primarily those on the Cardiac Surgery Step‑Down Unit.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in daily rounds with nurses, residents, and multidisciplinary caregivers; perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Develop and implement patient care plans, coordinate tests and consultations, and communicate treatment plans to surgeons and intensivists.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between Cardiac Surgeons, Residents, Fellows, PAs, Nursing Staff, Cardiologists, Heart Failure team, and patients/families.
  • Serve as a role model for professional APP practice and promote collaborative relationships among staff.
  • Prepare patients for discharge and provide ongoing patient education.
Ideal Candidate Skills/Experience
  • Advanced knowledge of ECG interpretation, radiology, and laboratory data.
  • Basic understanding of cardiac surgery patient population, including mechanical circulatory support (durable VADs).
  • Ability to function in a high‑intensity, complex unit within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Essential Functions
  • Provide direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients in the cardiac surgery department.
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room and perform technical clinical procedures.
  • Conduct complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develop care plans and follow‑up based on diagnostic findings.
  • Order medications and write prescriptions in accordance with institutional and regulatory policies.
  • Document admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries accurately and promptly.
  • Perform bedside procedures as appropriate for the patient population.
Qualifications
  • Education – Master’s Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant (required).
  • Licenses & Credentials – Registered Nurse (RN) with MA license; Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with MA license (or Physician Assistant with MA license).
  • Experience – Prior experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in cardiac surgery (preferred).
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices for cardiothoracic patients; skilled in medical history taking and assessment; ability to maintain quality control standards.
