Job summary

Job description

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 3-13 hour shifts, day/night rotation, and weekends/holidays.

Under general supervision and direction of the Cardiac Surgeons and Heart Center Intensivists, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant practice, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be responsible for the care of patients on the Cardiac Surgical Service, primarily those admitted to the Cardiac Surgery Step Down Unit.

Starting salary: $139,755.20.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in daily rounds with nurses, other advanced practice staff, residents, and multidisciplinary caregivers.
  • Perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Participate in development and implementation of care plans.
  • Coordinate tests and consultations, and implement treatment plans.
  • Communicate with referring physicians and prepare patients for discharge.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between Cardiac Surgeons, Residents, Fellows, PAs, Nursing Staff, Cardiologists, Heart Failure team, Intensivists, and patients/families.
  • Promote collaborative relationships and efficient use of resources.
  • Serve as a role model for professional advanced practice provider practice.
  • Provide direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients in the cardiac surgery department.
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room, perform technical clinical procedures, and perform complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develop appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on results.
  • Order medications and write prescriptions following organizational and regulatory policies.
  • Provide high quality and timely documentation including admission, progress, procedure, operative, and discharge notes.
  • Perform bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population.
Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of reading ECG, radiology, and laboratory data (preferred).
  • Basic understanding of cardiac surgery patient population, including mechanical circulatory support (durable VADs) (preferred).
  • Ability to function in a high intensity, complex unit within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant required.
  • Registered Nurse (RN – MA License).
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN – MA License) or Physician Assistant (MA License).
  • Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Cardiac Surgery preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients.
  • Skilled in taking medical histories and assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
Clinical Scope

Licensed provider working as an NP in cardiac surgery, credentialed with Operative First Assist, and/or acting as a responding clinician for patients with ventricular assist devices.

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patient population in the cardiac surgery department.
  • Assists surgeons in the operating room.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops follow-up plans based on findings.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions per policies.
  • Documents care promptly.
  • Performs bedside procedures as appropriate.
