Job Summary

This position is nights only, 6:00 PM‑7:30 AM with weekend/holiday rotation. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works under the direction of Cardiac Surgeons and Heart Center Intensivists to care for patients on the Cardiac Surgical Service, primarily those admitted to the Cardiac Surgery Step Down Unit.

Essential Functions
  • Participate in daily rounds with nurses, advanced practice staff, residents, and multidisciplinary caregivers.
  • Perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, develop and implement care plans, coordinate tests and consultations, and communicate with referring physicians.
  • Provide patient education, prepare patients for discharge, and keep surgeons and intensivists updated as required.
  • Maintain open lines of communication among surgical staff, residents, fellows, PAs, nursing staff, cardiologists, heart failure team, intensivists, and patients/families.
  • Serve as a role model for professional APP practice.
Responsibilities
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patient population in the cardiac surgery department.
  • Assists surgeons in the operating room, performing technical clinical procedures and performing complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow‑up based on diagnostics.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to policies and procedures.
  • Provides high‑quality and timely documentation: admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population.
Qualifications

Education

Master's Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant required.

Licenses and Credentials

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with Massachusetts license.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with Massachusetts license.
  • Physician Assistant with Massachusetts license.

Experience

Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Cardiac Surgery is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients.
  • Skilled in taking medical histories and interpreting findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards and function in a high‑intensity, complex unit within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Advanced knowledge of reading ECG, radiology, and laboratory data (preferred).
  • Basic understanding of the cardiac surgery patient population, including mechanical circulatory support devices (preferred).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to function in a high‑intensity, complex unit within a multidisciplinary team.
Benefits and Compensation

Scheduled weekly hours: 40. Work shift: rotating. Remote type: onsite. Work location: 90 Blossom Street. Pay range: $122,803.20 – $173,867.20 annually.
