Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking a Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Technician to help ensure the safe decontamination, sterilization, assembly and testing of surgical instruments used in the Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, and other units.

You will maintain inventory, prepare and dispense sterile supplies, and support quality initiatives and infection-control standards. The role emphasizes teamwork, adherence to procedures, and ongoing training.

Qualifications

• Must obtain within 1 year of hire.
• H.S. Diploma/GED required.
• Completion of a sterilization/processing course required.
• Certification: CBSPD or CRCST and Certified Registered Central Service Technician required.

Responsibilities

• Disassembles, cleans, inspects, prepares, assembles, sterilizes and dispenses surgical and procedure instrumentation and trays for the Operating Room, Delivery Room, nursing units, and all other ancillary departments, according to prescribed procedures and aseptic technique.
• Assists in providing customer departments with sterile supply inventory.
• Maintains communication with customer departments regarding requests and delivery of sterile supplies.
• Decontaminates, prepares, processes, and sterilizes instruments, trays and sets for multiple departments using infection control guidelines and proper techniques.
• Operates instrumentation washers, ultrasonic equipment, and sterilizers (steam, plasma).
• Distributes sterilized instruments and trays to customer units and areas.
• Audits supplies and inventory levels and notifies leadership when levels are low.
• Processes orders for supplies from Storeroom and stocks shelves.
