Job summary

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Inc. is seeking a Phlebotomist for a night shift in Philadelphia, responsible for obtaining blood specimens via venipuncture, fingerstick or heelstick in accordance with test requirements and safety protocols.

The role requires maintaining patient identification, communicating collection details to nursing staff, and ensuring proper handling and transport of specimens. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred and adherence to biosafety policies is essential.

Responsibilities

• Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
• Performs phlebotomy and ensures accurate collection of requested tests from patient through venipuncture, fingerstick or heelstick.
• Maintains positive patient identification during specimen collection.
• Communicates to nursing personnel or physician office relative or discrepant patient identification, fasting requirements or other related factors regarding collection.
• Communicates to Nursing when in house patients refuse blood draws.
• Reviews all requisitions for missing information.
• Follows up with facility or provider if unable to obtain all information required for test performance.
• Checks appropriate collection, sorting and storage areas in the facilities for specimens to ensure specimens are not missed, and may transport/distribute these specimens to the laboratory as needed.
• Monitors information in Collection List and Unreceived Specimen Report.
• Completes Collection List with accurate time of collection and phlebotomist code.
• Cleans and stocks work area and assists with maintenance of supplies.
