Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution or equivalent required.
• Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Technician, Histotechnician, Pathologists Assistant or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 2–5 years’ work experience preferred.
• ASCP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receives specimens in the grossing laboratory.
• Enters patient information into the laboratory information system, verifying identification.
• Labels cassettes with accession/laboratory numbers.
• Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures, such as preventive maintenance and temperature checks.
• Maintains a clean and well-organized work area.
• Performs various clerical duties.
• Maintains strict confidentiality and protects patient information.
• Ensures specimen integrity upon receipt and throughout the macroscopic examination process.
• Prepares surgical specimens for histologic processing according to policies and procedures.
• Sets up equipment, supplies, and specimens for macroscopic examination.
• Describes gross features of biopsies or surgical specimens without selective sampling.
• Loads prepared cassettes into a tissue processor and starts the processor.
• Maintains cleanliness of the anatomic pathology suite.
• Operates and cleans laboratory equipment, instruments, and workstations.
• Maintains wet tissue storage and disposes of tissues per procedures.
• Label, store, handle, and dispose of reagents and hazardous waste per regulations.
