Role Overview
The primary purpose of this role is to perform macroscopic examinations of higher complexity surgical tissue specimens under the guidance of the Pathologists and/or Pathologists Assistants. A minimum of 1 year of grossing experience is required. This position may also perform additional duties as needed including courier count-in, accessioning, equipment maintenance or other duties as deemed necessary.
Responsibilities
- Macroscopic examination of surgical tissue specimens with appropriate dictation and tissue sampling based on clinical history
- Ensuring additional studies and procedures (i.e. decalcification, flow cytometry, slide production) are performed based on clinical history and specimen type
- Verifying patient demographics and diagnoses, client data, test information, and laboratory results entered in the Laboratory Information Management System (NovoPath) and accessioning when deemed necessary
- Verifying that surgical specimens are correctly input into NovoPath
- Perform Quality Assurance for patient information with high accuracy and in accordance with established protocols
- Accurately complete paperwork for specimens to be sent to outside laboratories and ensure specimens are delivered to the proper location when deemed necessary
- Identify specimen errors and follow procedures to correct problems, including proper documentation
- Scan all paperwork, run missing requisition reports, and follow-up
- Complete procedures and work during scheduled shift without interfering with the quality of work or compromising the quality of patient care
- Needs to respond to changes in work schedule as necessary, continually use time to departmental advantage, and aid other departments when necessary
- Must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and perform well under stress
- Must be able to triage and prioritize tasks to meet daily deadlines and complete work efficiently
- Must maintain a clean working environment and practice and support safety in the workplace
- Must support Laboratory goals, policies, and procedures, and philosophy
- Comply with all State, Federal, and professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals
- Adhere to CAP, CLIA, State regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA regulations.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in science or science related field.
- 1 year of grossing experience.
