Job summary

NBCUniversal Local in Philadelphia is seeking an Assignment Editor to lead coverage of breaking news, coordinating editorial and logistical aspects for the newsroom and field crews.

You will research, pitch, and implement coverage of continuing stories and community angles, work with affiliates, and collaborate with website, social media, and streaming teams while maintaining story and contact files.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications preferred or equivalent experience.
• At least 4 years’ experience including: work in a broadcast news environment, coordinating assignments, generating story ideas.
• Two years’ experience as an Assignment Editor.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Lead coverage of breaking/developing news stories editorially and logistically for both the newsroom and field crews.
• Research, coordinate, pitch & implement coverage of breaking news, continuing coverage and community stories.
• Ability to quickly assess what is needed on coverage of breaking stories.
• Ability to find & book experts and community members who help define a story.
• Collaborate with the website, social media, and streaming teams.
• Initiate & maintain communication with affiliates & News Channel counterparts.
• Consistently monitor and break news through social media platforms and tools.
• Establish & maintain working story & contact files.
• Working Knowledge of Police Scanners.
• Working knowledge of live production/transmission.
• Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Ability to clearly communicate ideas and status updates to both editorial and technical teams.
