Job summary

The City of Hampton is seeking a Network Engineer to join its IT Team in Hampton, VA. You will provide professional technology services supporting the City’s local and wide area networks, including installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure.

Under supervision, you will gain mentoring from senior engineers while developing independent technical skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in IT/Network Engineering or closely related field.
• Minimum 2 years of full-time equivalent experience supporting data networks.
• Minimum 1 year configuring enterprise wireless infrastructure, firewalls, and switches.
• Combination of education and experience may be considered (e.g., Associate degree with 2+ years).
• Preferred Certifications include CCNA or PCNSA.
• Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
• Background check required before offer or promotion.

• Provide IT services supporting City of Hampton networks (LAN/WAN).
• Assist with installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure.

Are you an IT professional looking to grow your experience in network infrastructure maintenance, support, and configuration? The City of Hampton is seeking a Network Engineer to join our highly collaborative and dynamic Information Technology Team. In this role, you will provide professional technology services supporting the City of Hampton’s local and wide area networks. You will assist with the installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the City’s network infrastructure. This position works under the general supervision of the Network and Telecommunications Manager, with technical oversight and mentoring provided by senior engineering staff. Assignments are typically well-defined with established procedures, while providing opportunities to develop independent technical skills.

Minimum Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college, university, or technical school with a degree, diploma or certificate in Information Technology, Network Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Requires a minimum of two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience supporting data networks.
• Requires a minimum of one (1) year of work experience configuring and deploying enterprise wireless infrastructure, configuring firewalls and switches.
• An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered for this position to include
  • Associates degree with 2+ years of experience.
  • One of the preferred certifications with 2+ years of experience.
  • Associate’s degree AND a preferred certification with 1 year of experience.
  • HS Diploma and 4+ years of experience.
• Preferred Certifications include: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Palo Alto Networks Certified Security Administrator (PCNSA) or other industry standard certification..
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
• Requires effective time management and task prioritization skills.
• May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends.
• Requires an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support.
• The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
