Job summary

Hampton University seeks an entry-level Network Administrator to assist in monitoring, maintaining, and administering the university’s network and telecommunications infrastructure. You will support wired and wireless networks, IP-based phone systems, RingCentral, and related services under close supervision.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting, configuring RingCentral, maintaining documentation, and assisting with upgrades and security practices to ensure reliable operations for faculty

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in IT, CS, Networking, or related field.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals, routing, switching, and connectivity concepts.
• Experience with RingCentral, VoIP, or related communications technologies is a plus.
• Experience with Windows Server environments and Hyper-V virtualization is beneficial.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication; ability to work in a team.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot network connectivity, IP telephony, RingCentral voice, video, messaging and collaboration issues; coordinate with vendors and campus stakeholders.
• Serve as the primary RingCentral administrator, ensuring reliability and performance for faculty and staff.
• Provision, configure, and manage RingCentral users, call routing, IVRs, voicemail, messaging, and related settings per university standards.
• Perform routine maintenance of network and telecommunications equipment and implement approved changes under change management.

Job description

The Network Administrator is an entry-level technical positionresponsible for assisting in the monitoring, maintenance, and basicadministration of Hampton University’s network infrastructure. Thisrole supports daily operations of the University’s wired andwireless networks, legacy and IP-based phone systems, and relatedcommunication services under close supervision.

Examples of Duties

• Assist with the monitoring and support of the University'snetwork infrastructure, including wired, wireless, andtelecommunications systems; identify performance issues andescalate complex problems as appropriate.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity, IPtelephony, and RingCentral voice, video, messaging, andcollaboration service issues, coordinating with vendors and campusstakeholders as needed.
• Serve as the primary administrator for the University'sRingCentral platform, ensuring the reliable operation,availability, and performance of voice, video, messaging, andcollaboration services for faculty and staff.
• Provision, configure, and manage RingCentral useraccounts, call routing, IVRs, voicemail, messaging, and relatedsystem settings in accordance with university standards andoperational requirements.
• Perform routine transport, administration andmaintenance of network and telecommunications equipment,including switches, wireless access points, firewalls, and relatedinfrastructure; implement approved configuration changes underestablished change management procedures.
• Support the installation, configuration, patching,maintenance, and lifecycle management of network andtelecommunications hardware, software, and related services.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation for thenetwork and RingCentral environments, including network diagrams,inventories, configuration records, operational procedures,technology standards, and user provisioning and configurationprocesses.
• Assist with developing and maintaining end-user guides,knowledge base articles, training materials, and DoIT/NCS websitecontent to promote user adoption, improve self-service support, andensure the effective utilization of network and telecommunicationsservices.
• Respond to service requests and incidents in a timelymanner, providing effective customer support and regularcommunication regarding issue status and resolution.
• Assist with network upgrades, infrastructure projects,system migrations, and new technology deployments, workingclosely with senior staff and project stakeholders.
• Follow and support University cybersecurity, backup,disaster recovery, change management, and business continuitypractices for network and telecommunications systems.
• Ensure compliance with University IT policies, securitystandards, regulatory requirements, and technology governancepractices.
• Collaborate with other DoIT team members to implementservice enhancements, improve user adoption, and support thecontinuous improvement of campus communication and collaborationtechnologies.
• Other duties assigned by the NCS Director .

Typical Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in information technology, Computer Science,Networking, Telecommunications, or a related field; or anequivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, including routing,switching, and network connectivity concepts.
• Experience with or familiarity with network infrastructurecomponents, including switches, routers, and wireless accesspoints.
• Knowledge of Voice over IP (VoIP), telecommunications systems,or related communication technologies.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solvingskills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment andfollow established procedures and technical guidance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science,Networking, Telecommunications, or a related field.
• CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or similar industry certification.
• Experience administering or supporting Microsoft Windows Serverenvironments and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualizationtechnologies.
• Experience supporting VoIP, unified communications, orcloud-based telephony platforms such as RingCentral.
• Experience working in a higher education, public sector, orenterprise IT environment.
• Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation,user guides, and knowledge base articles.

Supplemental Information

• Standard office environment with periodic visits to wiringclosets, datacenters, and campus buildings.
• May require lifting of equipment up to 40 lbs.
• Occasional evening or weekend work to support scheduledmaintenance, emergencies or University events.
