Position Description

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides primary care as part of ahealth care team in an ambulatory setting in a particulardiscipline. Provides patient education and counseling as well asphysical assessment. May participate in teaching programs forstudents and other student residents. Work is performed under usualclinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact withpatients, families, and other clinic personnel and outsideprofessionals. Some positions in the classification require travelto outreach clinics and home visits, and participation ineducational efforts and special programs that occur outside ofnormal working hours.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Provide patient care management in collaboration with attendingphysicians in a Level-III NICU at Medical Center Hospital inOdessa, Texas.
  • Educate, counsel, and support families by explaining diagnoses,treatment plans, and prognoses, while guiding them throughdischarge planning and ongoing care needs.
  • Perform advanced neonatal procedures such as intubation,umbilical and central line placement, chest tube insertion, andneonatal resuscitation.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, lab results, and imagingto inform treatment decisions.
  • Prescribe medications to treat a variety of newborn conditions,including prematurity, congenital heart defects, respiratorydistress, and chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Coordinate and manage safe discharge planning and follow-upcare.
  • Attend high-risk deliveries.
  • Attend transports for high acuity patients.
  • Mentor and teach students and residents.
  • Flexibility with scheduling of shifts to meet requirements andwork-life balance.
