Job summary

The Access Services Manager at Harvard Library leads operations and staff across the Gutman Library, the Ernst Mayr Library, and the Loeb Music Library. This working manager role oversees circulation, stacks, reserves, and access services while mentoring staff and coordinating with the ELT.

Working 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm, the position emphasizes collaboration, service excellence, and inclusive practices, with potential renewal after a 1-year term and opportunities to shape

Qualifications

• MLS/MLIS or equivalent education or work experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of academic library experience with a strong public service orientation.
• Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in GLAM or related organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead, direct, and supervise daily Access Services operations at assigned libraries.
• Ensure units meet operational and communication expectations and plan daily workflows.
• Recruit, develop, coach, and performance-manage staff; provide feedback and conduct reviews.
• Maintain regular communication with leadership on performance and priorities.
• Develop, document, and refine procedures to enhance efficiency and user experience.
• Coordinate activities with other Access Services units and collaborate to solve problems.
• Manage service points and circulation desk services; enforce library policies.
• Train and support centralized digital course reserves services; communicate reserves policies.
• Provide Tier 1 information support in public service; collaborate with reference librarians.
• Assist staff in helping users with disabilities and coordinate guest access policies.
• Oversee onsite access to collections; manage shelving, transfers, and item records.
• Support on-site resource sharing and equipment workflows; maintain patron-facing equipment.
• Monitor facilities; coordinate with facilities and preservation services; conduct safety walkthroughs.
• Initiate collection projects; develop plans and timelines; monitor progress.
