Job summary

The State of Minnesota, through Mn State Academies, seeks an MSAD Residential Educator-Intermittent to support dormitory programs for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students. This role follows the school calendar and may involve summer session weeks; positions are filled on an as‑needed basis and are not eligible for benefits.

You will assist with instruction and student management, contribute to instructional program design, and help maintain records.

Qualifications

  • Parapro/Paraeducator certification or ability to pass within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience with students in educational/dormitory or caregiving settings.
  • Ability to read/write English to follow directions and maintain records.
  • Ability to communicate in conversational sign language.
  • HR skills to establish rapport with residential students.

Job Description

This position is an Intermittent Human Services Technician (HST) vacancy for the 2026-2027 school year at the MN State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD). The work schedule follows the school calendar and may include 3 weeks in July for the summer school program. Applicants are considered throughout the school year and will be called on an as‑needed basis to fill behind current MSA employees. This position is not eligible for benefits.

Responsibilities
  • This position provides substitute dormitory instruction or student management aide support at MSAD.
  • Under general supervision, contributes to the design and delivery of instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
  • Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics, or readiness for each, OR the ability to pass the Parapro or Paraeducator assessment within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver.
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language (to be assessed prior to offer of hire).
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced ASL Skills
  • Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance.
  • Must be able to walk/stand for at least eight hours.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check within the past 12 months.
