Job summary

Mn State Academies seeks an Interim/Intermittent Special Teacher for the Deaf, to fill substitute classroom roles during the 2026-2027 school year. Positions operate as substitutes, following the school calendar with potential July summer sessions and ASL skill assessment prior to hire.

Requirements include a Minnesota teaching license (Short Call Substitute at minimum) and fluency in American Sign Language, plus knowledge of deaf/hard of hearing students and education practices.

Qualifications

  • Valid Minnesota teaching license- at minimum a Short Call Substitute License
  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices
  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide instruction to students
  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students (preferred)
  • A valid MN DHH license (preferred)
  • Demonstration of advanced sign skills (preferred)

Job Summary

Applications received in response to this announcement will be used to fill Intermittent/Substitute Teacher vacancies at the MN State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) for the 2026-2027 school year. Applicants submitting applications to this announcement will be in an applicant pool considered throughout the school year for substitute teacher positions as they become available.

The work schedule follows the school calendar and may include 3 weeks in July for the summer school program.

  • These positions function as substitute teachers in the classroom teaching deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Under general supervision, contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
  • Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.

**Positions at MN State Academy for the Deaf require American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire**

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license- at minimum a Short Call Substitute License
  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices
  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide instruction to students
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students
  • A valid MN DHH license
  • Demonstration of advanced sign skills
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance) and be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the workday
